Kalpana Kumari
A wavy perm is one of the most popular and attractive hairstyles. Read on to know how to get these type of perms on your hair and take care for them.
The chemical process which changes the hair shape to create a different look is known as perming.
It enables people with naturally straight hair to enjoy a look with curls, and those with naturally curly hair to lead a life with straight hair. Hair perms can be spiral, spot, volumizing, wavy, or stack.

How to Get Wavy Perms

You can get wavy hair perms from a beauty salon. The treatment cost would depend upon the type of perms you are going for, products being used, and the length of hair.
No doubt you would have to spend quite a large sum of money to get your hair styled the way you wish to. However, if you are confident that you can play with hair styling chemicals and tools efficiently, you can perform this treatment right at your home. Here are the necessary instructions.
Go to a pharmacy, hair stylist, or a supermarket and get a wavy perm product. Almost all the products have usage directions mentioned on their pack. Read and understand these instructions well.
Wash your hair with a mild shampoo. You may use a high-protein conditioner also, but stay away from heavy conditioner as it may react with the perming chemicals and prevent them from setting the desired way. Allow it to air dry and comb them with a wide-toothed comb to get the tangles out.
Hair perming chemicals are not formulated to be used on the skin. Hence, you need to cover your skin well to avoid contact with chemicals. Apply petroleum jelly on your ears, face, and neck and wear good quality plastic gloves. All these measures would protect your skin from the chemicals. Now, you are prepared to go ahead with the hair perming treatment.
Divide your hair into four sections of almost equal width. It is now time for placing the rods. There are several types of rods, and each one can produce a different type of curl. To get the most natural curls or waves, use straight or cylindrical rods. This will allow you to wrap hair around the rod at the same width from top to bottom.
It is advisable to avoid the usage of spiral or concave rods, as only experts can work efficiently with them. To wrap a section of hair, start at the bottom and move upwards. Make sure that you do not bunch or clump your hair around the rods.
Apply the chemical on the hair, starting from the roots. Massage the chemical gently onto all your hair. Keep it on your hair for the time period recommended on the pack. When the recommended time period is over, rinse your hair well with plenty of water. It is very important that you remove the chemical completely or it will continue to act on your hair.
The chemical breaks the protein bonds in your hair, so you need to re-form them now. For this, you need to use a professional neutralizing solution. Blot your hair with a towel, hold it upside down, and shake it slowly.
Do not comb your hair for the next 24 hours. The newly-formed bonds take time to set. You may gently massage or blot the hair. Your hair would remain permed for the next 5-6 months.

Care tips

Wavy permed hairstyle needs special care and attention. The new hair growths would need to be touched up with the perming chemicals. This is necessary to blend the new growths with the rest of the hair on which chemical treatment has been done.
Chemically treated hair is prone to dryness and damage caused by pollutants and sun exposure. To minimize this damage, you need to eat right. Make fruits, vegetables, and protein-rich foods a necessary part of your regular diet. This would help a lot in maintaining the health of your hair.
Now, you have all the basic information which can help you plan how to move ahead to get wavy perms and how to maintain it for as long as possible.
