Lip balm is an ointment that is used for keeping your lips moist and crack-free. It is mostly made from petroleum jelly or natural substances like beeswax. It is different from lipstick or lip gloss as both serve only a cosmetic purpose.

Until recently, lip balms were available in neutral and colorless shades. However, many cosmetic companies have now introduced tinted lip balms which nourish your lips and give them a desired color as well.

Colors available

Lip balms are tinted according to the flavor they represent. Strawberry-flavored lip balm comes in a lovely shade of pink, while cherry-flavored comes in a bright red color. Deep red cranberry and purple blueberry is also popular. The bubblegum-flavored variety comes in different funky colors such as fluorescent green, yellow, and orange.
Mint-flavored lip balm is available in a cool blue color. Other flavors such as peach and coffee have neutral colors. These lip balms allow you to apply a subdued version of your favorite lipstick. Since their color is very light, they render a natural appearance to your lips. Some balms also come with a shimmering effect which alleviates the need for applying a lip gloss.
Just like ordinary lip balms, tinted balms also include an array of nourishing elements like vitamin E, jojoba oil, and almond oil. A lip balm with SPF 15 or more provides protection against sun damage. Sun damage is the main cause of cracked and chapped lips, since the lips dehydrate and lose all their moisture. These balms not only hydrate chapped lips, but also keep them soft and supple for a long time.

Homemade Recipes

You can easily make your own lip balm with a tint at home. The recipe is the same as that of an ordinary lip balm. You only need to add a coloring agent of your choice to give it a desired tint. You can either make use of your old makeup products or make it entirely out of natural ingredients.
To make it using a blush, choose the color of the powdered-blush and blend it well with a small amount of Chap stick or Vaseline in a container. If you are planning to use a lipstick, crush a small piece of it and blend it with the Chap stick or Vaseline. This way you can create a lighter version of your favorite bold-colored lipstick.
Another way of making a tinted lip balm is by mixing certain natural ingredients together. Heat an equal amount of almond oil and honey in a microwave bowl. Take a handful of cranberries and crush them. Add this pulp to the mixture of honey and almond oil and reheat it.
Add a small amount of beetroot juice to the above mixture to enrich the tint of the lip balm. Strain the mixture and combine a pinch of cherry powder for enhancing the flavor. Pour the mixture into small lip balm tubes or containers, and allow them to cool in a refrigerator.
