Tea Tree Oil for Acne

Nicks J
Tea tree oil acne products are being extensively used these days to treat acne. While the oil does not completely get rid of acne scars, it lightens them to a great extent.
Did You Know?
Tea tree oil must be diluted before applying it with cotton ball. For dilution, tea tree oil to distilled water ratio is 1:1. Or else mix 2 tbsp. of carrier oil (jojoba oil) in 1 tsp. of tea tree oil.
Tea tree oil has a high medicinal value due to terpinen-4-ol, one of the 98 compounds present in this oil. Terpinen-4-ol is a potent weapon against fungus, viruses and the bacteria.
The antibacterial properties of tea tree oil that are often talked about, come from terpinen-4-ol. Hence, it makes sense to use tea tree oil that acts as a natural antibacterial agent and clears acne.
Tea tree oil is a natural extract from the Melaleuca Alternifolia tree, and can effectively decrease acne symptoms like burning, stinging and dryness. It penetrates the skin and removes clogging of pores. It kills the germs and eliminates the pus filled pimples from the skin. When tea tree oil is applied regularly on the affected portion, it can rejuvenate the skin, thus helping to get rid of acne.

Tea Tree Oil and Skin Problems

This natural remedy is useful to treat a number of skin problems, but in order to cure acne, it is essential to use a high quality tea tree oil. Adulterated tea oil, that is sold by some suppliers, is of no use. Also, using this essential oil in the proper way is necessary to get the desired result. Directly applying the oil without diluting it, can damage the skin and cause blistering and irritation.

Diluted Tea Tree Oil for Acne

Tea tree oil, particularly the Australian tea tree oil, will work wonders for acne if it is diluted. Direct application of this oil can, however, aggravate the skin condition. The skin being sensitive to this oil, using it in its concentrated form is not recommended. As the skin is already damaged due to acne, applying diluted tea tree oil is not only the best option, but also the safest course of action.
A safe treatment for acne would be to take warm water and include few drops of oil in it. Washing the face with this mixture can show significant improvement in skin condition. Diluting it with jojoba oil, or grape seed oil, and applying it topically can also help to reduce symptoms of acne. It naturally cleanses the skin and removes all unwanted cells.
After applying this oil, one should avoid immediate exposure of the skin to the sun. A solution containing distilled water and tea tree oil in equal amounts is also used to treat acne. Severe forms of acne breakouts can be effectively controlled using diluted tea tree oil. This essential oil can also be used in the treatment of burns, wounds, and infections.

Aloe Vera Gel and Tea Tree Oil

Adding tea tree oil to aloe vera gel is a powerful combination that works to restore the natural texture of your skin. As we all know aloe vera products are useful to combat acne. However, aloe vera is more effective in treating acne when it is combined with tea tree oil.
For usage, combine 2 drops of tea tree essential oil into 25 ml of pure aloe vera gel. Clean your face with a mild soap and then use this mixture for massaging it on the affected areas.

Evidence

In one study, it was observed that a solution containing 5% tea tree oil is as effective as over the counter acne products made up of 5% benzoyl peroxide. However, many acne sufferers using benzoyl peroxide products notice skin becoming flaky and this is accompanied by burning and itchy sensation.
On the other hand, diluted tea tree oil does not produce any of these side effects and therefore is more preferred over acne treatment available over the counter.
