8 Struggles of a Girl with Naturally Oily Scalp

Meghraj Dhabale
Most of us are very particular about our appearance as it directly or indirectly affects our confidence. An oily and itchy scalp is downright irritating and is sure to make anyone conscious; in the process denting one's confidence.
The primary cause of an oily scalp is the excess secretion of sebum by the sebaceous gland. The right amount of sebum protects the scalp from losing moisture. Excess secretion of sebum over the scalp causes bacterial infection, leading to irritation of the scalp, greasy hair, and dandruff.
It blocks the hair follicle which interrupts the blood circulation, and this leads to weakening of hair. Reasons for the excess secretion of sebum are:
  • Genetically inherited scalp.
  • Excess intake of oily food.
  • Use of contraceptive pills which may lead to hormonal imbalance.
  • Mental fatigue due to stress.
  • Hormonal changes during the menstruation cycle.

Oh no, not again!

In the morning, you have dry hair, but as lunch time approaches, the hair turn oily and sticky. You have tried virtually everything in the book, right from using curls to hairbands, nothing seems to work.

God! Please help me

Any girl would vouch, oily hair are hard to set or style. Whenever you wish to try your favorite celebrity's hairstyle, no matter what you do, you end up with limp lifeless hair. You are helpless... and the situation seems hopeless.

What if someone find's out

You constantly worry about being the butt of all jokes if someone finds out you have an oily scalp. People around will comment in sarcastic or condescending ways. Not surprising, since an oily scalp is considered unhygienic. Subsequently, you always feel insecure.

Avoid social contact

You start avoiding proms or parties lest someone finds out about your oily hair and scalp. You avoid events and occasions where you have to stay for long hours. You feel everyone except you is having a great time enjoying the occasion.

Lack of concentration

You have to take care of your hair after every few hours. This begins to distract you and affects your levels of concentration.

Curb the urge

A fairly common instance is when you are at a social gathering, maybe attending a lecture or a ceremony or festival, and you have an uncontrollable urge to itch. One of the toughest things to do is to curb the temptation and resist your fingers from reaching for your crown.

They just won't listen to me

The more you try to style and shape them, the more oily they get. At times, their stubbornness drives you up the wall, and you vent the anger on the first unsuspecting soul who happens to cross your path. You start blaming those who are not responsible for your predicament.

Don't jump to conclusions

The worst part is when your friends and family behave in a judgemental way. You feel like yelling out loud that you did not intend to look like that.
An oily scalp is a health issue that can be dealt through medication and right precaution. Consult a dermatologist or trichologist who will suggest appropriate lifestyle changes and medication to overcome this issue.
