Split ends are common with those having long hair. It can be very frustrating, as it makes one's hair look dry and brittle. There are various reasons why split ends occur, but the main reason is damage to the cuticles.
Chemical treatments like perms, highlights, coloring, etc., make hair susceptible to split ends as these procedures damage the cuticles and dry out the hair. Excessive blow-drying, back combing, vigorous brushing, etc., also cause this predicament. Given in this HairGlamourista write-up are some precautions you can take to avoid getting split ends.

Regular Haircuts

The best remedy for split ends is cutting them off. Regular trimming will enure that the tips of the hair do not break, thus reducing splits. Also, trimming the hair once in 4 months promotes hair growth, and also adds volume to your locks.
However, regular haircuts does not guarantee split-end-free-hair, therefore, you need to take care of your tresses is the best possible manner. How to do so is mentioned in the following passages.

Regular Oiling

Massaging the hair regularly with coconut, almond, or olive oil helps to obviate the possibility of split ends caused due to dry hair. Oiling also helps the hair look healthy and shiny.
Always remember to heat the oil on a stove so that it is lukewarm before applying it to your hair. Partition your hair, and with your fingertips or a cotton ball apply oil to your scalp. Massage it in well in circular motion, moving from the roots of your hair to the tips. Let the oil soak for a couple of hours (or even overnight) before you wash it off.

Shampoo and Conditioning

Remove all the knots and tangles in your hair with a good wide toothed comb. After this, rinse your hair and apply shampoo thoroughly to your scalp and strands. As split ends are caused due to dryness, use a moisturizing shampoo to have soft and smooth hair. Do not shampoo your hair too often, as daily washing makes your hair dry and brittle.
Once you are done with this, condition your hair well, using a good quality conditioner. Blot the excess water out of your hair using a towel, and gently apply some conditioner only to your strands. Tie your hair in a loose bun, and cover with a shower cap. Let the conditioner soak for about 15 minutes, and rinse it out with cool water.
Apart from the mentioned remedies, you should also avoid using styling equipment that generate too much heat. Use styling products and serums before doing so. Always brush your hair when it is completely dry, to prevent breakage.
