Who said only long hair looks good when permed? Spiral perms for medium hair is the latest rage, and this story will tell you how you can get this gorgeous hairstyle for yourself!
Sujata Iyer
The other day, as I was walking through the park, I had an epiphany! I came face to face with the proverbial greener grass on the other side. I was born with naturally (ridiculously) straight hair! So, I always dreamed that my straight hair would have a glossy sheen to it.
I imagined myself flipping my hair over my shoulder and other girls casting envious looks at me as the sun's rays bounce off my straight hairstyle! Not only did any of the above NEVER happen, I ended up tying my hair in a profoundly boring ponytail for every occasion. Just as I was contemplating the sorry state of my mane, said epiphany occurred!
I saw a woman passing by, with the most gorgeous perms I had ever seen! That's when I realized, that maybe, maybe even God was fed up with my boring ponytail and he was giving me a sign. A sign to transform my look with spiral perms! Well, sign or no sign, I decided, at that moment, that I had had enough! I was going to perm my hair and that was that! How did I go about it? Please read ahead.

Medium Hair Length Perms

Where were we? Yes! I had decided to get a perm. But what I didn't know, was that there are different types of perms to choose from. I have medium hair, so I thought and thought about what kind of perm I should pick. And then, I had a winner. A spiral perm! Now all I needed to know was from where and how to spiral perm medium hair.
I thought of visiting a beauty salon, but when I found out how easy the procedure was, I decided to try perming my hair at home! Of course, I needed my friend's help for it, but then what are girlfriends for, if not for helping out in each other's hair escapades! Given below are the extremely easy steps to get those bouncy spiral perms.
  • First, gather all the things that you'll require: a perming kit (a trusted brand), perming rods (depends on the thickness of your hair), hair clips, a thin comb (preferably a tail comb), wrapping paper, towels, a plastic bag.
  • OK, first, wash your hair with shampoo and DO NOT condition it.
  • Towel dry the hair and leave it slightly damp.
  • Make sections of the hair, beginning at the nape and clip them.
  • Spiral perms are done vertically, as opposed to the horizontal manner of normal perms. So, begin by wrapping the hair from the bottom and then work your way upwards.
  • What you have to do is, open the section of hair in the middle and cover it using the wrapping paper.
  • Once wrapped, take your perming rod and place it vertically against the hair.
  • Slowly, begin rolling the hair around it in a, well, spiral fashion. It resembles a corkscrew, when done properly.
  • Repeat this for all the sections of the hair.
  • Once all the sections have been rolled, apply the perming solution generously, so that every bit of hair is covered, but does not drip with it.
  • Read the instructions on the perming kit carefully for the amount of time that the solution must remain in your hair.
  • Wrap a plastic bag around your hair (NOT YOUR HEAD) to keep the solution away from air.
  • After the time is up, rinse the hair thoroughly but gently, with the rods still in.
  • Towel dry till the hair remains damp.
  • Then, take the neutralizing solution from the perming kit and apply it on the hair just like you did the perming solution. This will help the hair remain in the permed state.
  • Once again, check the timing for this solution to stay in and when it is up, rinse the hair.
  • Remove the rods and use your hands to crinkle the hair.
  • Your dazzling spiral curls are ready!
Spiral perms are a good option if you want a carefree, yet, sophisticated look. That wasn't what I was aiming for but I still got it! Different sizes of rods determine the tightness or looseness of the curls, so take your pick and flaunt off a breathtaking curly hairstyle that is sure to set a trend. This hairstyle looks simply amazing with bangs thrown in! Whenever I look at mine, I just silently thank that pretty young woman in the park. God bless her!
