Shampoo for Greasy Hair

Aastha Dogra
Are you confused about what kind of shampoo will be most suitable for greasy hair? This story gives information regarding what to look for in a shampoo to avoid oily hair.
Greasy or oily hair is caused when there is excess production of sebum by the sebaceous glands. Sebum is a wax-like substance that is naturally produced in the body to keep the skin as well as hair soft and supple. Generally people who have more hair on their scalp are more prone to get greasy hair due to the presence of more sebaceous glands on their scalp, causing excessive production of oil.
Another reason behind greasy hair is the hormonal changes that take place in the body during puberty and menopause. Usage of hair care products that are unsuitable for the hair can make the hair greasy too. Lastly, keeping the hair unclean by not washing it frequently, thus causing dirt and toxins to build up in it, can make hair greasy and prone to dandruff.
The best solution is to keep the hair clean and use hair care products that are specially meant for such hair types. Given below are some things that you should look for when buying a shampoo for oily hair.

Shampoos

Shampoo for greasy hair should be one that helps in maintaining the right pH levels of the hair as well as the scalp. Certain oil control shampoos and shampoos which are considered "gentle and clarifying" will fit the bill perfectly. Ingredients to look for are:
Astringent: The best shampoo is the one that contains astringent. Shampoos containing astringent help remove the excess oil making the hair grease free.
Fruit Extracts: Shampoos which contain certain fruit extracts such as lemon, orange, and olive aid in making hair oil-free. So shampoos with citrus fruit extracts should be used.
Herbal Ingredients
Look for herbal shampoos which contain ingredients such as aloe vera, rosemary, tea tree oil, orange bitter, and chamomile. They are mild and help remove excess oil while preventing the hair from drying.
Vitamins and Minerals: Oil control shampoos which contain vitamins such as pro-vitamin B5, vitamin B complex, vitamin A, vitamin C, and beta carotene as well as minerals such as zinc and calcium, will help in keeping hair healthy and oil-free.

Home Remedies

Homemade Shampoo: A homemade shampoo can be made easily by mixing your everyday use mild shampoo with a teaspoon each of lemon juice and aloe vera gel. Shampoo made from this simple homemade recipe should be used to wash hair everyday to avoid build up of oil and dirt.
Lemon Juice: Lemon juice absorbs all the extra oil in hair. To apply lemon juice, take a cotton ball and soak it in the juice, part your hair and then apply the juice on the scalp as well as the hair. Leave it on for ten minutes and then rinse off. Follow this routine after washing your hair with a mild shampoo, at least thrice a week for best results.
Keeping oily hair clean and using the right kind of shampoos and conditioners will definitely help you to get naturally soft and oil-free hair.
