Makeup for Sensitive Eyes

Rimlee Bhuyan
People who have sensitive eyes should be very careful while choosing makeup, as the wrong products might cause watering and redness. They should always use cosmetics that are specially formulated for sensitive eyes.
Eye makeup is used to enhance the beauty of the eyes, and the right products can make you look more appealing. But what about people who wear contact lenses or have sensitive eyes? Should they forgo eye makeup altogether? Well, such people can still wear eye makeup without any fear of an allergic reaction. Sensitive eyes are prone to swelling, redness, watering, itching, and flaking of skin. In adverse conditions, you might even get an infection with crust formation in the eyes. To avoid such complications, you should choose cosmetics for sensitive eyes with utmost care.
Eyeshadows
When choosing eyeshadows for sensitive eyes, opt for cream or gel-based ones over the powder ones. The pigments in the powder are likely to get into your eyes and cause an infection. Avoid any shadow with shimmer or glitter particles in it, and also steer clear of the metallic shadows.
If any particles get in your eyes, wash them with cold water immediately. Some of the best shadows for sensitive eyes are:
Nars Cream Eyeshadow
Chanel Illusion D'Ombre Long Wear Luminous Eyeshadow
Chanel Les 4 Ombres Quadra Eye Shadow
Maybelline New York Color Tattoo by Eye Studio 24HR Eyeshadow
Inglot Eye Shadows
Eyeliners
When choosing an eyeliner, opt for the creamy wax-based ones instead of the liquid varieties, as they contain latex which might get into your eyes, causing pain and redness. While applying a wax-based liner, make sure that you apply it outside the lash line and do not rub it on the inside rim of the eye.
Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-In-Place Eye Pencil
Rimmel London Eyeful Eye Glistener
Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner
Make Up For Ever Aqua Eyes Waterproof Eyeliner Pencil
L'Oréal Paris HIP Studio Secrets Professional Truth Cream Eyeliner
Mascaras
No eye makeup is complete without a swipe of mascara to define your lashes. While choosing mascara for sensitive eyes, use a hypoallergenic one that has thickening properties. Avoid lash-lengthening mascaras, as they contain microfibers that might enter your eyes, causing pain and swelling.
Mascaras should be replaced every two months even if there is a lot of product left, as they are prone to bacterial growth. Strictly avoid pumping the mascara wand in and out of the container, as this allows air to get inside, along with bacteria.

Tips
While choosing eye makeup, you should always purchase cosmetics that are labeled hypoallergenic or non comedogenic. These are products that are dermatologically approved and have a lesser likelihood of irritating your eyes.
All cosmetics contain preservatives that help to retard the growth of bacteria. However, over time and if the cosmetic cases are not tightly closed, bacteria enters into the cosmetics and multiplies on it. If such cosmetics are used, you might develop inflammation of the cornea and even conjunctivitis.
The best way to avoid this is to properly close the lids of cosmetics and to replace old ones every 3-4 months.
Another very important factor to consider while choosing makeup for sensitive eyes is that you should always opt for cosmetics that are fragrance-free. Some people are very sensitive to fragrances, which might lead to an allergic reaction.
