Razor burns can be described as an irritating sensation felt on the skin surface after hair removal. Usually, this condition arises in a day or two after shaving. When it becomes severe, a kind of rash may develop causing a burning sensation. Gradually, the rash may progress to small razor bumps.
A number of factors may contribute to this problem, like, shaving with a dull razor blade, using the blade in a hurry, dry or sensitive skin condition, etc. Those who use manual razors are more likely to get this kind of injury as compared to electric razor users. It can be found on the face, armpits, chest, etc. Both men and women are susceptible to this skin problem.

For Men

Men often look for an instant burn relief as they have to shave their facial hair quite frequently. Here are some excellent treatment options, that can effectively bring about improvement in the condition in no time:

Application of Ice

You can get instant relief from razor burn itching by applying ice on the affected area. Take a few ice cubes in a plastic bag and wrap it up with a soft piece of cloth. Keep this pack gently over the affected skin surface for about 15 minutes and you will feel relieved. If required, you can repeat it several times a day, but the duration of each application should not be more than 15 minutes.

Aspirin Tablets

Take two uncoated aspirin tablets in a small bowl and crush them with a knife. Pour a few tablespoons of water into the bowl, so that the crushed particles get dissolved in the water properly. Mix it well. Dip a cotton ball into the mixture and apply it gently on the razor burn areas of your face. Wait for 10 minutes and then wash off the face with lukewarm water. You will get a good relief from pain and irritation.

Strawberry Face Mask

Take two strawberries, mash them well and add one teaspoon of sour cream to it. Mix the ingredients properly to obtain a thick paste. Apply it on the face in the form of a thick layer and leave it untouched for 10 minutes and then wash off. This should be done twice a week for better results.

For Women

A number of natural substances that women use for their beauty treatment also possess certain healing properties that are beneficial for the treatment of burns caused by a razor. A few of them have been mentioned below:

Yogurt and Honey

Both these ingredients are easily available in your kitchen. Prepare a mixture using one tablespoon plain yogurt and half teaspoon pure honey and apply gently on the razor burns. Keep for fifteen minutes and wash off with lukewarm water. Pat dry it with a soft towel.

Oatmeal Powder

Add one cup oatmeal powder into your warm bath water and soak your legs into it for 15 to 20 minutes. Make sure that the water in your bathtub is warm and not hot. After the bath, apply a good quality skin moisturizer on the affected skin.

Apple Cider Vinegar

This is because apple cider vinegar not only helps in soothing up the irritation caused by burns, but also kills all those bacteria present in the armpit that tend to aggravate the problem further. Soak a clean cotton ball or soft piece of cotton cloth into a cup of apple cider vinegar and apply it generously all over the affected area. No need to wash off the area and let the vinegar get absorbed into the skin.
A few simple steps can help prevent razor burns to a great extent. The skin should be moistened properly before shaving. Those who are prone to this problem can shave after taking a shower, which will keep the skin hydrated. Always use a sharp razor and not a dull one. The razor should be moved in the direction of the hair growth. Thus, the irritation caused by the hair follicles can be minimized in this way.
