Paraffin Wax Machine

Shrinivas Kanade
Paraffin wax machine is an equipment comprising a heat source and a tank. The tank holds the wax, while the heat source melts it and maintains it in the liquid state. This machine therapy is used for treating muscular pain associated with several serious diseases and health conditions.
Paraffin wax is derived from petroleum and is used in what is called paraffin therapy, to soften the hard edges of pain. It is found to be especially useful in relieving muscular pain and was also used by Romans for its benefits, 2,000 years ago.
In general, this wax is melted in a paraffin bath or a wax machine and the body parts to be treated with it, are dipped in it. Alternatively, it is also possible to paint the melted wax on the body part.

How to Use It

Today, various sports-injuries, sprains, and aching joints are treated with paraffin therapy. It is believed that the heat transferred by the wax to the ailing organs improves the blood flow to it, and brings in comparatively more nourishment and helps in the healing process. It also elevates the pain tolerance level and flexibility
● Put the chunks of wax in the machine and heat it between 130 °F to 140 °F (48 °C to 66 °C).
● After removing jewelry and clothes, use warm water to clean the aching body parts.
● For hands and legs, you can dip them in the machine very gently and let the wax penetrate the skin and reach the muscles. However, for back pain, you can apply the melted wax on your back with the help of another person and let it cool down to solidify. Repeat the process for 2 - 4 times.
● Cover the wax with a warm towel or a plastic bag.
● Let it harden, and remove it after 20 minutes to 1 hour.
● You can put back the removed chunks and bits in the machine for reuse.
● It may take 12 hours to melt completely, and before applying it, ensure it is not too hot. This is because, it can cause a serious injury to the skin.

Uses of the Wax Machine

The treatment is a cost-effective way of treating inflammation or swelling resulting from injuries to ankle, wrist, or foot. The application of wax on the affected part results in the liberal lubrication of the muscle tissues and the removal of excess fluid from the area.
Relief can also be obtained by using it on your hands, in individuals suffering from Raynaud's phenomenon. This condition affects blood vessels and results in constriction of fingers and toes. It also causes discoloration in the areas of toes, fingers, and other areas.
Following are the conditions, wherein, such treatment may prove to be beneficial:

● Carpal tunnel syndrome: Many people, including physical therapists, advise use of this wax to treat carpal tunnel syndrome. The wax provides longer and uniform heating of the wrists and hands, which facilitates more blood circulation in the area, thus causing faster healing.
● Skin: In spas, since a long time, paraffin wax has been in use for the purpose of softening the skin. In some cases, essential oils and/or aromatic oils are also added to it to provide additional benefits to the skin.
● Musculoskeletal conditions: When an individual is suffering from musculoskeletal disorders, use of this wax bath may bring relief. Muscle pain associated with fibromyalgia, muscle spasms can be relived.

● Arthritis: An individual suffering from constant pain and stiffness in the joints, due to arthritis, can also benefit from paraffin bath treatment.
● Scleroderma: It is a condition, which affects the internal organs and causes over production of collagen fibers, which are the components of the skin structure. This causes the skin to thicken and tighten, which results in restricted flow of blood and movements.
The treatment comes handy for individuals suffering from scleroderma. The wax used in the treatment softens the skin and brings relief.
Never apply paraffin wax to cuts or open wounds, especially in case of an allergy. Manufacturers have come up with different models to help you choose the most suitable machine for yourself.
