Moreover, it easily attracts dirt. Though frequent shampooing is one of the remedies to get rid of an oily scalp, you may end up having dry hair with this method.

Causes

The scalp consists of sebaceous glands that produce oil or sebum, which is further absorbed by the hair. This sebum is a wax-like substance that helps to keep the hair soft, waterproof, and slender. An oily scalp is basically the result of over production of sebum by these glands.
The excess oil produced cannot be completely absorbed by the hair, and hence, this oil gets accumulated over the scalp, leading to the formation of an oily scalp. Excessive oil makes the hair look greasy and untidy.
Hormonal imbalance is one of the most common causes of an oily scalp, and acne is commonly observed in people with this condition. Sometimes, allergy to certain food items is another cause. Some people do not take proper care of their hair, which causes the sebum to accumulate on the scalp. Stress can also be a cause.

Treatment

Use a Shampoo Regularly:

Frequent shampooing is one of the most useful remedies for excessive oil on the scalp. But it is necessary that you use a shampoo that is specially recommended for an oily scalp. Use shampoos that do not contain strong chemicals in them.
According to hair experts, shampoos that contain less chemicals and are transparent, effectively treat oily scalps as compared to those which contain heavy detergents.

Scalp Massage:

A scalp massage should always be done while shampooing, and never after or before shampooing. Massaging the scalp between the shampooing increases the secretion of oil, and can cause an extremely oily scalp. A scalp massage improves the blood circulation and can aid in absorption of the excess oil into the hair.

Natural Remedies:

There are a number of natural products that can be used effectively to treat the condition. Look out for shampoos and other hair care products that contain any of these ingredients: tea tree oil, eucalyptus, chamomile, rosemary oil, jojoba oil, lemongrass, etc.

Home Remedy:

Preparing a homemade astringent can help reduce the excessive secretion of sebum. To prepare this astringent, all you need to do is add witch hazel extract to a mouthwash and apply this mixture to your scalp with the help of cotton pads.

Tips

  • Do not overdo brushing the hair; this may stimulate the glands to secrete more oil.
  • Use a hair conditioner that contains very less percentage of oil.
  • While using a conditioner, see that you apply it just to the ends of your hair and not the roots.
  • Avoid too much stress, and follow a healthy and nutritious diet that contains fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • Use cold water to wash your hair, instead of hot water.
It is recommended that you take medical advice before using any commercial hair care product to treat the condition.
