Oily Hair Care

Dhanya Joy
Extreme care is essential for those having oily scalp and hair. Caring for oily hair will prevent many of the problems associated with it, like dandruff and hair loss.
Taking care of oily hair is surely not an easy thing to do, but it is extremely essential, considering the fact that most hair problems arise because of an oily scalp and greasy hair. The scalp turns oily due to the excess production of oils by the sebaceous glands present in the scalp. This oil then starts receding along the hair, making it oily and sticky, making it look unhealthy. It becomes prone to attracting a lot of dust and dirt which affects the health of the hair follicles. It is therefore essential to keep it clean and free of oil, so that hair problems like dandruff, hair fall, thinning hair, etc., can be avoided.
Apart from the factors mentioned above, oily hair can also be caused due to stress, hormonal imbalance, and the overuse of hair care products. You should first determine the cause before you start treating it.

Hair Oil

One of the first and most important hair care tips that any professional hair specialist would give you, is to avoid the use of hair oil for your scalp. The use of oil on your scalp will only add to the problem. Therefore, oil your hair only an hour prior to shampooing. Do not leave the oil overnight or for long hours.

Shampoo and Conditioner

Use a mild cleansing shampoo and a conditioner that is meant for oily hair. Make sure the shampoo is used liberally on the hair and scalp. Repeat the application if required. Wash it off thoroughly and make sure no residue of the shampoo is left on the scalp. Use conditioner only on your hair, avoid applying it to the scalp. Rinse it off thoroughly.

Styling Products

Make sure that the styling or leave in products that you use on your hair are suitable for your hair type. One option is to use styling sprays and gels instead of mousse, which usually makes the hair more oily. As far as possible, avoid using styling tools as much as you can as the heat can increase the production of oil in the scalp.
Read the following tips for additional oily hair care:
  • Oily hair can be washed on a daily basis, but avoid using shampoo on the scalp. The scalp should be washed not more than thrice a week.
  • Avoid combing or running your fingers through your hair during the day, as this causes the oil from the scalp to graduate to the hair.
  • Restrict the consumption of fatty and greasy food to limit the production of oil in the scalp.
  • Wear short hair styles that can be worn and managed easily. Long hair that is permed, can also limit the spread of oil from the scalp to the hair.
  • A vinegar rinse post hair conditioning can help control oil production.
  • Lemon juice can be rubbed on the hair and scalp to prevent problems like dandruff.
  • Protect your hair from dust and dirt by using head covers to cover your head when you are outdoors. This will also protect your hair from the harmful UV rays of the sun.
Ignoring any type of hair care will only lead to more hair problems, making it unhealthy, weak, and lifeless.
