The dry skin is an eternal and an all year round problem. Keeping it moisturized and preventing it from scaling even when you are outdoors, is quite a task. It requires a good enough supply of body lotion and one that is free from chemicals and other irritants. The best remedy to keep your skin soft and supple is homemade body lotion. Only a few realize that an effective solution for treating scaly skin lies in the kitchen and not in malls that try to sell you commercialized products at pretentious prices.

Shea Butter Lotion

For centuries the Africans have used shea butter as a remedy for various dermatological remedies. Let's see how to make this amazing lotion at home.
Ingredients
  • 6 tablespoons of shea butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil,
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 2 tablespoons avocado oil
  • ½ teaspoon cherry flavoring agent
Directions
Heat the skillet and melt all these ingredients together on low heat till it reaches 180 degrees. Once it reaches this temperature, remove it from the heat and allow it to cool down. While the mixture is still warm, add the cherry flavoring and mix it well. Pour it in a glass jar and store it in a cool place. Within a day you will be able to give yourself a nice treat with this sweet smelling lotion.

Rose Lotion

Rose water and rose petals are known to cure acne problems in a jiffy. This body lotion recipe is especially for the night, to soothe your senses and to give you a good night's sleep.
Ingredients
  • 2 tablespoons almond oil
  • 1 cup rosewater
  • 1 bar of beeswax with rose essence
Directions
To make rosewater at home, boil rose petals in water and let them sit till the water cools down. Strain out the petals and the water left behind will be your rosewater. Melt the wax in a double boiler till it completely melts. Once it melts, put it on a slow heat. At this point slowly keep adding the rosewater and stirring the mixture. Once this is totally mixed, add the almond oil and stir it. Let the mixture cool down a bit till it turns warm. Pour it in a glass jar and store it in a cool place.

Chamomile Lotion

Chamomile is known to prevent skin allergies, burns, and other problems. Here's how you can make your own chamomile lotion at home.
Ingredients
  • 1 cup dried chamomile leaves
  • 4 tablespoons honey
  • 1 cup milk
  • 8 teaspoons wheat germ
Directions
Allow the chamomile leaves to steep into milk for a few hours. For better results, let the leaves soak overnight. The next morning, strain the leaves and save the milk. Add the ingredients and beat till it becomes fluffy. Store it in a cool dry place. This lotion has a shelf life of about a week.
The biggest advantage of making lotions at home is that you know what are you using. As many creams and lotions use oil and water as a base, these items are usually found in the kitchen. The other ingredients such as essential oils, beeswax and butters are readily available at any pharmacy. Before you pick out any kind of oil, do remember to check out its properties and whether it is suitable for you with a small patch test.
