You can color your hair blonde, brown, red, or black even at home, with some valuable guidance that this HairGlamourista article gives.
Homemade dyes, though eco-friendly and safe, take a long time to show substantial effects. Especially if you are trying to lighten your hair, it will take a long time and the color won't be as noticeable as with a chemical dye. So opt to make hair dye at home only if you have patience.
Earlier, hair was colored only to cover the grays, but these days, highlights, lowlights, and tip-dyed hair are all the rage. Right from subtle tints to jazzy bright colors, many different shades are experimented with. However, with hair colors comes hair damage. The harsh chemicals used in these dyes damage the hair.
Moreover, getting your hair colored at a salon every month is very costly. But does that mean you stop coloring your tresses? No; as making your own hair dye is not difficult. It is not only cheaper, but also safer for your hair. We tell you how to make hair dye using natural ingredients.
Henna Dye
Henna is an excellent natural dye if you want to color your hair red. In fact, it is the only natural ingredient that can give a dramatic effect to your tresses. It not only colors your hair, but also makes it soft and shiny.
Add hot water to henna powder to make a smooth, thick paste. Let it rest overnight, or for 4 - 5 hours. You can add olive oil or eggs to the mixture to make a nourishing mask.
Then apply the mixture all over your head. Cover the hair with a shower cap. Wash off after 4 - 5 hours.
Henna dye is a bit messy to apply but gives a beautiful color. If your hair is light, it will turn red, if it is dark, you will get reddish tints.
Using Food Coloring
You can also use food colors to make a temporary hair dye for your hair.
Add 3-4 drops of the desired food color to your shampoo, mix properly and apply to your hair. Wash the hair thoroughly after two hours.
This color won't stay for long, and will come off after a few washes.
Using Kool-Aid
Using Kool-Aid to make a hair dye is super fun, as you can even experiment with different flavors for a variety of colors. But remember to use the unsweetened variety or you may end up with sticky hair.
The number of Kool-Aid packets you will need, will depend on the length of your hair, and the area you want to color. Shoulder-length hair may require around 3-4 packets. Just mix it with a conditioner and water to form a smooth paste.
Now cover the entire hair section that you want to color with it, and ensure that there are no lumps. Cover your head with a plastic wrap, and sleep. Wash off the color in the morning.
Different Flavors for Different Colors-
Bright red - Tropical Punch Deep red - Cherry
Purple - Grape Blue - Blueberry Lemonade

You can also combine two or more variants to experiment with different shades.
