How to Get Rid of Dark Spots from Acne

Aastha Dogra
Scarring and dark spots are after-effects of an onslaught of acne. Here are some effective home remedies as well as other treatments to get rid of these problems.
Dark spots usually occur when we pick on the pimples or zits, in our enthusiasm to get rid of them quickly. What we don't realize is that by doing this, we will be left with some ugly-looking spots or scars, which will be very difficult to treat later on. If you too have such scarring and spotting on your skin, here are some handy tips.

Lemon Juice

Apply lemon juice, as it is a natural skin bleaching agent. For this purpose, make a mixture of two teaspoons of lemon juice, three drops of honey, and one teaspoon of rosewater.
With a cotton ball, dab this mixture gently on the face. Leave it on for about fifteen minutes, and then wash off with lukewarm water. Apply this lemon juice solution on your face regularly, for best and quick results.

Glycolic Acid Peels

Almost all salons offer these facials, also called alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) peels, for treating acne scars. In this treatment, a chemical peel, containing glycolic acid, is applied on the face.
It helps in the formation of new skin cells, and thus, a new layer of skin replaces the old scarred layer. This process leads to diminishing spots or scars.

Hydroquinone

Apply skin creams which contain hydroquinone. Alternately, topical skin creams, gels, and lotions, which contain vitamin C, are equally effective. These reduce the inflammation, and you don't feel the need to pop the zits.

Microdermabrasion

In this procedure, aluminum oxide crystals are run on the skin surface by using controlled pressure. These crystals abrade the skin, and thus, minimize pigmentation and dark acne spots. Regular application of exfoliating scrubs can avoid the requirement of such treatments.

Masks

To get rid of dark spots naturally, the solution lies in applying face masks prepared from ingredients available in your kitchen.
A simple recipe for such a face mask is mixing chopped parsley, grated onion, grated cucumber, fuller's earth, and rose water together.
Then, apply this mixture on the face every week. Another effective mask recipe is to mix oat flakes, milk, and honey. This has to be applied only on the affected skin area.

Preventive Measures

>> Drinking lots of fluids and water will keep your skin hydrated and clear.
>>Eating foods such as cucumbers, lemons, tomatoes, and oranges, helps in purifying the blood, and removing toxins from the body.
>>Regular exfoliation of the skin helps in removing dirt and grime from the skin pores, preventing acne as well as acne-related spotting from occurring in the future.
>>Lastly, application of a sunscreen, when going out in the sun, helps in preventing the occurrence of dark spots.

>>Wash your face regularly throughout the day, so as to avoid oily skin and the resultant onslaught of acne.
Besides the various treatments, the mentioned preventive measures should also be undertaken to minimize the recurrence of spotting.
