Dark circles under or around the eyes can be a genetically inherited trait, or a sign of nutritional deficiencies. This BeautiSecrets write-up gives you a basic idea about why people develop dark circles and bags around the eyes, along with some simple home remedies that can help reduce their appearance.
Periorbital dark circles or simply dark circles are nothing but the round and uniform areas of pigmentation that develop beneath or around the eyes, and make you look tired and exhausted. So, they can be a source of anxiety and concern for a large number of people. There can be several factors that can cause dark or black circles under the eyes, of which the most important ones are discussed in this article.

Causes

Various factors, ranging from fatigue and insufficient sleep, to allergies and certain other health conditions can be associated with the development of eye circles. Sometimes, the blood vessels of that area can become more noticeable due to the thinning of the skin.
This can happen due to the damage caused by the excessive exposure to sunlight. Moreover, our skin loses collagen and becomes thinner as we age, which can also make the eye circles darker and more prominent.
For some individuals, dark circles can be an inherited trait. Apart from these, eye circles can be caused by some other factors, including allergies and hay fever, asthma, eczema, dehydration, anemia (especially iron deficiency anemia), poor blood circulation, nutritional deficiencies (especially a deficiency of vitamin K), fatigue, a lack of sleep, liver diseases, and certain medications that can dilate the blood vessels, including those present under the eyes.

Home Remedies

The appearance of eye circles can be reduced to a great extent with the help of some simple home remedies, and a few change in lifestyle and diet. You can try the following simple remedies to reduce the appearance of eye circles.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking at least 8 to 10 glasses of water daily, and get plenty of sleep (at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep daily).
  • Apply lemon juice under the eyes for 15 to 20 minutes. You can also try a mixture of lemon and tomato juice.
  • Close the eyes and put cucumber slices over it for about 15 to 20 minutes. In a similar way, potato slices can be used to reduce the appearance of eye circles.
  • Apply almond oil under and around the eyes, and gently massage the area just before going to sleep.
  • Tea bags are another effective remedy. Put tea bags over the eyelids for about 10 to 15 minutes.
  • For tired eyes, try a cold compress. It can help soothe and refresh your strained eyes.
  • Mix equal parts of cucumber and potato juice, and apply this mixture under and around the eyes. Keep it for 15 to 20 minutes, and then wash it off with clean water.
  • Olive oil can also prove helpful in reducing dark circles, and nourishing the delicate skin around the eyelids.
  • Apply crushed mint leaves around the eyes. Leave them for about 15 minutes, and then wash them off with clean water.
In addition to these, it is equally important to follow a balanced diet, that contains food rich in essential vitamins and minerals (especially vitamin E, C, and iron). Even eye creams that contain vitamin A and K can prove immensely helpful in reducing the puffiness and discoloration of the skin under the eyes.
If your dark circles are too prominent, then consider to visit a dermatologist. This can help ascertain the underlying causes, on the basis of which your dermatologist can prescribe the appropriate creams and ointments for eye circles.
Sometimes, laser therapy and chemical peels can also help erase eye circles, but do not forget to talk to your dermatologist about the various aspects of such treatment.
