Batul Nafisa Baxamusa
The herringbone braid sounds like a complicated embroidery stitch. But in fact, it is one of the most easiest hairdos you can try on your hair. The following story will show you how to do make this braid.
Everyone, from the red carpet celebrities and models walking the ramp to teenage girls, love the soft and feminine herringbone braids. This classic hairstyle looks complicated and extremely elaborate but is actually quite easy to style.
It is also known as the fishtail plait as it fans out like a fish tail when not secured with a rubber band. Unlike an English braid or French braid, the herringbone braid uses two strands of hair for styling. Here are some instructions on how to go about getting this beautiful hairstyle.

How to Make a Herringbone Braid

  • It is better to start with slightly wet hair or greasy hair as it helps hold the hair in place. Comb through the hair to remove all the knots and tangles.
  • Make a ponytail at the base of the skull. Secure with a ponytail holder.
  • Divide the hair of the ponytail into two sections.
  • Take a small section from the left side, cross it over the left section, and add it to the right side.
  • Now take a section from the right side, cross it over the right section, and add it to the left side.
  • Repeat the steps to create the herringbone braid.
  • Secure the braid with a ponytail holder.

Different Hairstyles

There are many hairstyles that you can try. You can try a French fishtail style that begins at the hairline. In this style, you need to take hair sections that are about the width of your forehead and divide them into two.
Then you need to cross tiny sections of the hair from the right side to left and then from the left side to the right. Continue braiding down the back of your head and add hair from the sides of your head to the two sections like in a French braid. After you reach the nape, you to need to continue braiding like you would normally braid hair.
A double herringbone braid is made by joining two single herringbone braids on either side of the head, at the base of the skull. Messy and unkempt herringbone braids are quite popular as well.
This braid is great for medium-length hair and for women with long hair. The plait adds a twist to the traditional braids. You need to remember that you need only two main strands of hair and cross smaller sections to give the hairstyle an intricate look. It is looser than the other braid styles as you do not interweave the hair strands, just cross them over. If you have thicker and longer hair then styling may take a little more time.
