Many African-American women and men are dropping chemical treatments to style or condition their hair. This is because using harsh treatments that contain strong chemicals or hot appliances can rip the moisture from your tresses, and cause hair breakage.
Here are some tips on selecting the right conditioner for African-American hair.

Understanding Your Hair Type

African-American hair care needs special products, as their mane is very thick and curly, and has delicate strands. Sebum, which is the natural oil secreted by the scalp, can easily move from the scalp to hair if the hair is straight.
However, due to the very curly texture of African-American hair, sebum has a harder time at it. This make the hair very dry. Also, the outer layer of the hair strands can be twice as thick as Caucasian hair. So, you need to take extra care to prevent your hair from drying and breaking.
So, avoid products that contain harsh chemical or drying ingredients, like alcohol. Use products that contain moisturizing mild ingredients or essential oils.

Choosing the Best Conditioner

African-American hair needs deep moisturizing and conditioning treatments, as it gets exposed to many harsh treatments like chemical relaxes, stressful braiding, and heat appliances, like hot irons and blow dryers.
Hence, deep conditioning once a week and mild conditioning for other days is required. With conditioning, you can retain the moisture and reduce hair breakage. Using leave-in conditioners is recommended, and deep hair conditioning treatment is good once a week.
You can buy a deep conditioner that contains natural and organic ingredients. However, many such products still contain some chemicals in them, hence, a deep conditioning treatment using homemade ingredients is advisable. You can use a bit of olive oil as a leave-in conditioner for African-American hair.

Mayonnaise Conditioner

The best conditioner for black hair can be made at home using some mayonnaise. In a bowl, mix half a cup of mayonnaise, 10 drops of rosemary essential oil, and 7 drops of tea tree oil. Rosemary oil will help condition the hair and tea tree oil will help to thoroughly clean it.
Mayonnaise is excellent for deep moisturizing. Massage your scalp with a bit of olive oil, and then apply the mix to the hair for conditioning. Make sure you cover all the hair. Let is sit for 20 minutes, and then wash with cool water.

Avocado Conditioner

For a lighter and more refreshing conditioner for curly hair, use the following tips. In a bowl, mix fresh avocado fruit mash, 3 egg yolks, honey, and lemon juice. Egg yolk will help to nourish the hair, avocado will moisturize and refresh, honey will add a nice shine, while lemon juice will help to clean the hair.
Apply this mix and cover all your hair properly with it. Then, cover your head with a plastic cling fling, and wrap your head with a warm towel. Keep it for 10 minutes, and then wash off with cool water.

Essential Oils Conditioner

Hot oil treatment works great as homemade conditioner, and using it once a week can be very beneficial to stimulate new hair growth. Also, it helps to get life in dull and frizzy tresses, and helps restore natural shine to them.
For a nice hot oil treatment, add 5 tablespoons of pure olive oil, 20 drops of rosemary oil, 10 drops of lavender essential oil, and 10 drops of tea tree oil in a small metal bowl. Lavender and tea tree oil will help to thoroughly clean the scalp and hair, while rosemary will help to get rid of dandruff and stimulate new hair growth.
Then, heat this mix and massage the scalp with it in circular motions. Apply the remaining oil to the hair, and wear a warm towel for 20 minutes. Then, rinse your hair with shampoo and cool water, and you will have soft conditioned hair.
