Hair Care Home Remedies

Bidisha Mukherjee
Our hair gets extensively damaged due to sun exposure, various pollutants, and also because of improper hair care habits. The following hair care home remedies will help solve some of your troubles, by replenishing tired and damaged tresses.
Hair has three different textures―dry, normal, and oily. Any kind of hair texture will have its own share of problems. Dry hair can get worse if you don't use an appropriate shampoo and conditioner. Oily hair attracts dirt and dust particles, turning it into a messy heap that is unmanageable, unruly, and unattractive. The following home remedies will aim at solving some of your hair dilemmas, although it is important to seek professional help if you've abused your hair for far too long.

Hair Care Remedies to Try at Home

Hair Loss

Hair loss is an eminent problem among both women and men, where genetic cases need help by hair-related professionals or doctors. For hair loss, a mixture of Indian gooseberry and lemon juice is an excellent remedy. Prepare a thick paste by mixing one tablespoon each of Indian gooseberry powder and lemon juice. If required, add some water to make a smooth paste. Apply it to your hair regularly for one month; results will vary depending on various factors.

Dandruff

Dandruff is a widespread problem for those who have extremely dry scalps. To get rid of pesky dry flakes, soak 2 tablespoons of fenugreek seeds in water, overnight. Make a paste of the soaked fenugreek and apply it directly on your scalp. Leave it on for about 30 minutes before washing it off with a mild shampoo.
Apply products on your hair that contain lemon extracts and the like, since it dries the scalp considerably to stunt excess oil secretion. Use dandruff-centric hair care products, specifically.

Hair Growth

Some women find it difficult to grow their hair fast; a simple solution to this problem is massaging your scalp with coconut milk or oil every day; leave it overnight to reap the oil's effects, before washing it off the next morning.
Even warm mustard oil that has been boiled with henna leaves can be used for this purpose. The blood circulation of the scalp improves because of the massaging and thus, facilitates hair growth while letting the oils penetrate deeper.
If a child has lice, applying a paste of margosa leaves directly on the scalp, will help kill them and soothe itching; do this until the lice have completely gone.

One of the best hair-conditioning home remedies, is by using rosemary oil. Slightly warming it up before applying it, will help it penetrate the hair shaft and cuticle, effectively.
Wrap up your hair in a warm towel, and wash it off the oil after 30 minutes. After every wash handle wet hair very carefully. Wet hair loses its strength, thus making it brittle; avoid brushing hair while it is wet, because it will leave it tangled, frizzy, frayed, and split at the ends.
The sun can cause extensive damage to hair, therefore, before stepping out into the sun, make sure you wear a wide hat or cover your head with a scarf. Avoid leaving hair open while in a moving vehicle, since it can snap hair violently, leaving it knotty and damaged.

Dry Hair

To restore the health of dry hair, massage your scalp and the entire length of hair, with a paste made of two tablespoons of gram flour and one cup of coconut milk. Then rinse it off after 5-10 minutes. Do this at least once a week and you will be surprised to see the difference.
Regular conditioning is a must for dry hair. You can make a homemade conditioner by using one tablespoon of mashed avocado, one tablespoon of mayonnaise, and one tablespoon each of glycerin and castor oil.
Apply it properly on the scalp and leave concealed in a shower cap for 15-20 minutes. Increase your zinc intake since it has been found to cause hair loss―consult a doctor before attempting to take supplements for the same.

Oily Hair

Because oily hair gets dirty very easily, it requires frequent washing. You should shampoo your hair at least 2-3 times in a week. Boil some mint leaves in a glass of water for about 20 minutes, strain the solution with a sieve, and mix it directly in the shampoo you're using.
It absorbs excessive oil present in the scalp and thus, hair becomes less oily. Applying fresh lemon juice on the scalp also helps to remove oil buildup. Another excellent home remedy is tea, since it contains tannic acid that acts as an astringent.
Boil a pot of tea and allow it to cool; rinse hair with it after you're done shampooing. Thus the oiliness of hair will decrease to a great extent. Never use conditioner after shampooing oily hair, since it can weigh it down and make it look even oilier.
Do not brush oily hair since it can spread from the roots to the ends of the hair. Instead, let is air-dry on its own, using your fingers to gently detangle knots. Stick to products that are tailor-made for oily scalps.
Prior to applying any of the remedies given here, you must identify the exact type of your hair. I would also like to add that some of the remedies discussed here may work for some people, and not as effectively for others. After experimenting with the above home remedies, you'll find one that best suits your needs.
