Freckles are pigmentation spots caused by excessive melanin production. They are generally triggered off by the sun's UV light. In certain cases, hormonal imbalances and genetic diseases such as xeroderma pigmentosum can lead to freckles.
While there are expensive dermatological treatments such as chemical peels and laser treatments for freckle removal, the home remedies can help you get rid of the ugly red spots splattered across your face without any side effects.

How to Get Rid of Freckles at Home

Lemon:

A proven home remedy for lightening the melanin pigmentation, lemon juice can be applied to the skin to reduce freckles. The exfoliating properties, antioxidants and other skin lightening benefits help reduce skin pigmentation. Apply lemon juice to the facial areas with maximum amount of freckles. Keep it for fifteen minutes and wash it off with cold water.
You can also soak in some amount of lentils and grind it to a paste. Mix this with the lemon juice and apply it over the freckles. Let it stay on for ten minutes or so and then wash off to reveal a glowing, flawless skin.

Honey:

Honey, with its natural bleaching properties, does help in reducing skin pigmentation and the excess melanin production that results in brown and red freckles. You can add some lemon juice and salt to honey. Apply it to the freckled area of the face. Wash off with lukewarm water after 15 minutes or so, to remove dark spots on face.

Cucumber Mask:

One of the most popular ways of getting rid of the freckles is by using a cooling cucumber mask.
For making this homemade skin bleach, you need to grate the cucumber and apply it to the face. Leave it on for twenty minutes and wash the mask off. Other great fruit and vegetable masks include apricots, strawberries, and red currants.

Sour Milk/Cream:

The lactic acid present in sour milk and cream has a gentle peeling effect on the skin that helps reduce freckles without irritating the skin. You can apply sour cream to the face and then wipe off gently with a soft tissue. Top it up with a moisturizer for dry skin.

Parsley Juice:

Parsley juice has bleaching agents that help cure and remove freckles. For making parsley juice at home, finely chop the parsley and pour it into boiling water. Strain the juice and allow it to cool. Mix the parsley juice with orange juice and lemon juice to get rid of the freckles.

How to Prevent Freckles

Here is a look at some preventive skin care measures against freckles.

♠ Foods rich in vitamin C such as fruits, green onion, black currant juice, and wild rose tea help in preventing the appearance of freckles.
♠ If your skin is prone to getting freckled and sun burnt, make sure that you wear a sunscreen of at least SPF 15 before stepping out of the house.

♠ Avoid stepping out in the sun too often or wear sun protective clothing and a hat if you have to go out in the sun.
If you cannot get rid of the freckles despite these measures, it is best to cover them up with the right makeup. A good concealer and foundation that matches your skin tone can help hide those unwanted spots.
