An eyelash curler is a metal or plastic cosmetic tool having a vise-like gripper and finger loops. The curved gripper is used to hold the lashes while shaping them. A cushion lines the base of the gripper for protecting the lashes from breakage.

Thus, with an eyelash curler, the lashes are induced to lift by applying gentle pressure. It is much safer than using fake lashes, since no foreign object is attached to your skin.

Hence, it is not always necessary to spend a lot on a curler. While purchasing it, make sure you check for an intact cushion and curve angle of the gripper.

Applying Mascara before Curling

Whether to apply mascara before curling your eyelashes is up to you.

While most manufacturers prescribe using the device without any eye makeup, some women prefer using eye shadow and mascara before curling to have long-lasting upward curled lashes. The only thing to keep in mind is to clean the curler of all traces of mascara after use.

Preparing Eyelashes for Curling

As per your choice, clean and prepare your eyelashes (applying eye shadow, liner, or mascara). Wait till your eye makeup dries. Ensure that the curler is clean and dry. Hold it in the same way as you hold scissors and open the gripper wide.

Curling Eyelashes

While retaining the wide position of the gripper, place the upper lashes in the mouth of the curler. Gently close your eyes and open them, so that all the lashes are positioned parallel to the clamps.

Then adjust the curler to the base of the lashes (near the eyelid but not over it). Keeping your eyes open, close the gripper and retain it in the same position for a few seconds. Finally, open the curler and remove it. Follow the same steps for the other eye.

With practice, it becomes easier to use an eyelash curler. Coming to its longevity, it will not last for a lifetime. With the correct maintenance, you can increase its durability. Do not forget to wipe off the cushion after every use with a dry tissue paper. If you notice that the cushion is no longer firm, replace it or buy a new curler.
