Our scalp tends to get dry when the secretion of oil by sebaceous glands that lie underneath the skin of the scalp, decreases due to some reasons. This oil has a lubricating effect on the scalp and hair follicles. The key intrinsic factor that is responsible for causing dryness of the scalp is nutritional deficiency.
Other external factors that may lead to this condition are use of harsh shampoo, chemicals of hard water, pollution, dry-weather condition, etc. Dry scalp is often accompanied by itching sensation of the skin, formation of flakes on the scalp, and increase in hair loss.
Home remedies involve the use of naturally occurring substances that are easily available at home. Here are some of the most effective natural remedies:

Home Remedies

Massage with Oils

Massaging promotes circulation of blood and activates the sebaceous glands, which in turn facilitate the release of scalp oil.
To achieve better results, you can massage the scalp with a hair oil made of one ounce of almond oil and 3 drops each of vitamin B oil, vitamin E oil, and lavender essential oil. Each of these ingredients have an excellent effect on the scalp.
A mixture of olive oil and almond oil can also be used for head massage.
These oils have hydrating effect on the scalp making it soft. Tea tree oil scalp massage also gives good results. Applying small amount of this oil not only gets rid of dry scalp, but also prevents any fugal or bacterial infection of the scalp.

Use of Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar cleanses up the residue formed as a result of severe dryness of the scalp. Dilute ½ cup of apple cider vinegar with ¼ cup of water, and 1 teaspoon of honey with 2 drops of lavender oil to it. Apply this mixture on the scalp properly and wait for an hour. Wash off with warm water. Repeat this twice a week for obtaining best results.

Milk and Honey

This is the best remedy for dry and itchy scalp. The rich content of vitamin D in milk not only has a soothing effect on the scalp, but also improves the overall hair health. Honey is a natural moisturizer for the skin and hair.
Prepare the mixture by combining ½ cup of milk and ¼ cup of honey. You can add 2 tablespoons of extra-virgin olive oil for better results. After massaging this mixture on the scalp, leave it for about 2 hours and then wash off with a mild shampoo. The ingredients will get deep into the infected scalp, and provide relief from dryness as well as itchiness.

Natural Conditioners

Read the label of the products before purchasing them. After shampooing, you should use natural conditioners like yogurt or diluted form of white vinegar for proper conditioning of the hair. These substances can help get rid of dandruff too.
The aforementioned remedies can give you excellent results, provided you are using the right kind of shampoo. Wash your hair with a natural shampoo that does not have any harsh chemicals like sulfates. These chemicals obstruct the pores of the skin, which in turn decreases the production of sebum by the glands.
