Dry skin is characterized by lack of sebum as well as moisture. It is often dull and patchy in appearance. Dry, itchy skin is a problem throughout the year but it becomes more troublesome during the winters.
There can be several other factors that can contribute to dryness. Washing skin with harsh cleansers, over-exfoliation, excessive exposure to sun, air conditioners and heaters all contribute to dryness.

Switch to a Creamy Cleanser

Any skin care routine starts with cleansing. So it is essential that you choose a cleanser that is mild and does not irritate your skin. People with dry skin should opt for a hydrating creamy cleanser that does not contain too many harsh chemicals.
Avoid gel-based cleansers as they are meant for people with oily skin. Gel-based cleansers are too drying and might cause flakiness.

Opt for Gentle Exfoliation

Skin which is not clogged with dirt and dead cells is better able to absorb moisturizer. So, it is very important to exfoliate your skin regularly. However, make sure that you do not use a scrub more than twice a week and the product is not too abrasive.
Also use gentle circular motion while exfoliating your skin. Remember that over-exfoliation can cause your skin to peel and become inflamed.
If you wish to use a natural scrub, then go for gram flour. Take a tablespoon of gram flour and add 3-4 drops of milk to it. Mix well to make a paste. Spread it all over your face or other parts of the body. Leave it on for about 10 minutes to allow it to dry. Scrub it off with water. Your skin will become soft and smooth.

Choose a Good Moisturizer

To keep your skin soft , moisturize it right after taking shower when the skin is still damp. Look for a hydrating moisturizer that has a thick and rich formulation. Moisturizers that contain humectants like glycerin and hyaluronic acid are best for flaky skin.

Use Hydrating Masks

There are a wide variety of moisturizing face packs available in the market. You can use these face packs or you can also opt for a natural face pack.
A natural way to moisturize skin is to use fruit pulp. Papaya is considered to be good for extremely dry skin.
Take a tablespoon of papaya and mix it with 2-3 drops of rose water and a teaspoon of honey. Apply it on face and leave it on for 10-15 minutes. Wash it off with water to have smooth skin.

Use Lukewarm Water

Well, your hot shower could be robbing your skin of natural oils and moisture. This will make your skin dry and rough.  So the best thing to do is to bathe with lukewarm water and switch to a hydrating cleanser which is free of alkali. Also, avoid having longer showers during the winter months.
If you have dry skin, it is best that you switch to thicker body butters and body creams. Avoid vigorously rubbing your skin with a towel and instead pat dry skin after a shower. With the right beauty routine, you can avoid dry flaky skin.
