In this story, we tell you how to figure out what the shape of your face is, and give you some tips on how you can enhance and showcase it in the best possible manner.

The Main Facial Shapes

The main shapes that the human face can be identified by are as follows.
  • Oval
  • Round
  • Triangular
  • Square
  • Pear
  • Oblong
  • Diamond
  • Heart
  • Combination

Oval

An oval shape is considered to be the most versatile. You can determine if this is your shape if your face's length is equal to one and a half times its width. A woman with this facial structure can wear her hair as long or short as she wishes as all lengths suit her.
Hair that is styled away from the face is an attractive look. Layers look great as well but avoid thick bangs or hairstyles that have a lot of height on top.
Men should avoid a slightly rounded hairline, heavy fringes, and bangs. You can wear long hair with shags or even wear your hair short.

When it comes to choosing sunglasses or eye gear, rounded frames are your best bet as they will suit you the most.

Round

If the shape of your face is round, then its width may be about ¼ to ½ inches less than the length. The common characteristic is a rounded chin. Women may try hairstyles with soft waves flowing downwards to reduce the illusion of roundness. Extremely curly hair or poker-straight hair can make your face look wider.
Hairstyles for this facial structure include those that are styled higher at the top and front. You should try adding a little volume near the crown area as it will help reduce the roundness.
In case of eyeglass frames, choose rectangular frames. Do not buy spectacles that are too small as they make your face appear larger. You can also opt for rimless glasses as they will flatter you.

Oblong

An oblong face is long and oval. Such people have a rounded jawline. Women with this shape can try chin-length hairstyles as they create an illusion of lesser length. Do not get a bob cut, but you can choose to add a full fringe to add balance. Brow-skimming bangs or shoulder length bobs suit this facial type.
Men should choose hairstyles that are fuller at the sides and shorter at the top. This helps add some width to the face. You can even try layered hairstyles that give a messy or tousled look. Avoid long hairstyles or those that are angular to your hairline.
As far as eyeglasses are concerned, choose frames that do not extend beyond the widest part of your face. Round and square-shaped frames are also great.

Triangular

This shape is characterized by a small, pointy chin, narrow jawline, wide forehead, and cheekbones. Women should choose haircuts with layers or those that have sparse bangs. You can wear your hair long or short.
Short hair with spikes work well for men. Sporting long hair can also be a good option for men with heart-shaped faces.

You can choose oval-shaped eyeglass frames as these truly suit people who have this face structure.

Square

The forehead, jawline, and cheekbones of a square face are almost equal in length. Women can choose styles that soften these features. You can wear your hair long or short, with soft edges. Do not opt for sharp cuts, heavy fringes, and bobs.
Men should choose hairstyles that have a clean cut around the ears. The hair should be cut close to the sides. Avoid puffy styles that add to the width and volume of this facial structure.

Eyeglass frames that suit a square facial structure are oval frames.
