Crusty scalp may be accompanied by itching, white flakes, and flaking in the scalp. White flakes are commonly called dandruff. The most common causes for the same are seborrhea dermatitis and fungal infection of the scalp.

Causes

The imbalance caused due to high pH levels and growth of bacteria is the main reason for this problem. Sores could also develop on the scalp due to dermatitis.
Dandruff may occur due to fungal infections or hormonal changes and can cause shedding of the skin of the scalp leaving behind white flakes. Seborrheic dermatitis is a condition wherein the hair becomes oily and greasy.
The actual cause for this scalp problem is not yet known, however, it is observed that the scalp contains bacteria and yeast during this infection. This can be treated with proper shampoos recommended by a dermatologist.
Over-the-counter shampoos are not effective and safe to use over the scalp as they contain harsh chemicals. The best way to prevent this problem is by deep cleaning the hair follicles where there is maximum bacterial growth.

Treatment

Seborrheic dermatitis can be treated using medicated shampoos. The major components present in these shampoos are ketoconazole, selenium sulfide, coal tar, and few more. For treating severe infection, water-soluble ointments can be applied on the scalp which contain vitamin B6. This helps to maintain the proper nutritional balance of the scalp.
For treating dandruff, the first thing that comes to our mind is using an anti-dandruff shampoo. If one is affected by severe dandruff problems, cortisone solution or steroid solution work well to cure the same. These solutions can be applied only if prescribed by a doctor.
Anti-dandruff shampoos which are medicated contain substances that are antifungal in nature. So, treat these shampoos as medicines for the scalp. Furthermore, anti-dandruff shampoos contain salicylic acid which are very effective in treating this condition in the case of adults.

Herbal Remedies

Tea tree oil can be used as a natural remedy for reducing the itching and white flakes. It is also believed to reduce hair fall. Tea tree oil and shampoo are known for their antiseptic, antifungal, and antibacterial properties.
Another remedy is using aloe vera hair care products. One can rub aloe vera gel on his/her scalp and keep it for 10-15 minutes. Then, wash the hair properly with a shampoo.
One can also apply a few drops of lemon juice in warm coconut oil and massage on your scalp slowly and gently in circular motion. Leave the oil on the hair for two hours. After that, rinse with a mild shampoo. This is believed to be one of the most effective remedies for itchy scalp.
It is often seen that scalp disorders are mostly due to heredity problems. Such disorders are not contagious and can be controlled with proper treatment. Mild cases can be treated with daily cleansing of the hair, however, white, itchy, and dry flaky scalp requires medicated treatment.
Following the mentioned remedies might prove beneficial. However, in case the condition still persists or on observation of severe symptoms, one should consult the doctor to avoid the possibility of any further complications.
