Coconut Oil Treatment

Coconut oil can be effectively used for nourishing dry, damaged hair, and getting rid of dandruff. It can also be used by those who have a dry skin. Enlisted here are the benefits of using coconut oil for hair and skin.
Coconut oil is obtained from copra, which is the dried meat or kernel of the coconut. It is rich in antioxidants. It also contains lauric acid, capric acid, and caprylic acid, which in turn are responsible for its antifungal, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties.
Unlike other oils, this oil does not clog the pores. There's no denying the fact that this oil has a moisturizing effect on the skin. It has been used in the Indian subcontinent for treating damaged hair. The following sections provide information on how coconut oil can be used for skin and hair.

Coconut Oil for Hair

Hair products that are used in cosmetic procedures such as blow drying, bleaching, and coloring often cause the hair to turn dry. Exposure to sun or dry, autumn winds could also damage the cuticle of hair.
Application of coconut oil on the hair and scalp can help treat dull, dry, and damaged hair. It acts as an excellent conditioner, and can be used to restore the lost luster of one's hair. It also conditions the scalp.

As a Conditioner

To use it as a conditioner, apply this oil to your hair after you have taken a shower. Ensure that your hair is damp, but not dripping wet. Pour some oil on your palm, and apply it evenly to the hair.
Start with the wet ends, and slowly work up the length of the hair. Don't apply a lot of oil to the scalp. Apply only a little to the roots to avoid the greasy look.

To Treat Dandruff

This oil has a moisturizing effect, and is also antifungal in nature. To treat dandruff, apply the oil all over your hair and scalp, and leave it on for 8 to 10 hours. You can also leave it overnight, so that the oil can penetrate within the inner layers of the hair. To remove any trace of oil, shampoo your hair the next morning.

Coconut Hot Oil Treatment

An effective way to nourish hair is to opt for coconut hot oil treatment. For this, first oil your hair properly. Then, wrap your hair in a towel that has been dipped in hot water or heated using a dryer. Keep the towel on, till it becomes cold. Ensure that the towel is not too hot. Continue this for 20 - 30 minutes. Reheat the towel as many times as needed.

Coconut Oil for Skin

The skin is stripped off the natural body oil, when we use soaps or gels that contain harsh chemicals. The antiseptic fatty acids in this oil help fight fungal and bacterial infections. It also replenishes the skin, thereby keeping it moisturized and healthy.

For Dry Skin

To treat dry skin, rub this oil all over the body. Stand under a steamy shower and wash and rinse off in warm water. A mild soap could be used sparingly.

For Acne-prone Skin

Due to the antimicrobial or antibacterial properties of virgin coconut oil, it has been found to be useful in treating acne. Spot application of this oil has been found to be beneficial for people with acne-prone skin.

Other Skin Problems

Topical application of virgin coconut oil has been found to be useful in treating rosacea. It is believed that application of this oil might help treat diaper rashes and warts.
Coconut oil does have a moisturizing effect on the skin, and helps promote hair growth. To add to that, it is inexpensive. So, instead of opting for expensive cosmetic products, use this oil to keep your hair and skin healthy.
