Brittle nails are a sign of a nutritional deficiency and weak finger and toenails that could be a major problem for some. Having brittle nails causes the nail to chip, crack, split and break off easily, which may injure the nail bed. This may also result in permanent damage to the nails or cause stunted nail growth.
People of all ages can have brittle fingernails, but people above a particular age are more prone to having brittle nails due to the aging process. Some home remedies can help you get rid of this problem permanently.

The causes include lack of moisture, over-exposure to dry and hot conditions, exposure of the nails to chemicals and solvents, excessive use of nail polish or manicuring the nails frequently, and trauma or injury to the nails.
Brittle nails could also be a symptom of a fungal infection, eczema, or vitamin, calcium, or zinc deficiency. Prevention and treatment using home remedies and other methods is an effective way out of this problem.

The treatment involves consumption of nutritional dietary supplements like biotin, calcium, zinc, niacin, and iron supplements. These can also be obtained from food sources by including them in your daily diet.
Biotin plays an important role in curing brittle fingernails and strengthening the nails, so make sure you have a glass of soy milk every day to obtain the required amount of biotin. Also include food items like peanuts, cauliflower, lentils, and walnuts to strengthen your nails from within.

Practicing some home remedies regularly can help you get rid of brittle nails and have strong, healthy, and fast-growing nails.

Grooming your nails daily and in the right way will help you obtain strong and healthy fingernails. Never grow your nails too long, keep them medium-sized, trim and file them regularly. Use an emery board to file the nails and trim them in a square or round shape.

Oil Soak

Oil soak your nails twice a week if very brittle. Heat some vegetable oil, pour it into a glass bowl and soak your fingers in it for about half an hour. Remove your fingers and massage the oil on the nails and fingers. Do not wash it off. This is one of the best remedies.

Keeping your hands and fingernails moisturized is of utmost importance, especially if your nails are dry, fragile and brittle. Use a good hand moisturizer, preferably one with vitamin E, to moisturize your nails. You can also apply vitamin E oil to moisturize your nails.
