Blotchy skin is characterized by the appearance of red spots or bumps on the face, the raising and swelling of certain parts of the skin, itching, as well as pain at times. It becomes quite apparent when a person has blotchy red skin because there is a noticeable reddening of the face and a flushed look.

What Causes Blotchy Skin

Here, we will look into the reasons for what causes this condition and how to go about treating the same.

Allergies

There are several people who are prone to having allergies, and while some have allergies to common things like pollen, dust, mold and animal fur or dander, or even food allergies, there are certain people who have allergies that are not so common.
Like allergies to a particular material or a food product that does not form a part of the common dishes. One of the most common symptoms of an allergic reaction is that of a red blotchy face, that is accompanied by itching and swelling.

Alcohol

It has been seen that many people who consume high amounts of alcohol develop blotchy red skin, especially on their face. Their face looks shiny, flushed, and takes on a tinge of red.
The reason this happens is because alcohol causes dehydration in the body and when there is less water, the body reacts in this manner. Along with that, alcohol also leads to poor circulation, which is another cause for red blotches to appear on the face. Poor circulation makes the blood flow to limited parts and therefore the skin appears blotchy.

Sensitive Skin

People with sensitive skin face this problem, where contact with anything leads to a blotchy red face and body. Use of shaving razor with force or hot wax for waxing or thicker thread for eyebrows leads to red blotchy skin.

Medical Conditions

There are several skin disorders that are characterized by this condition. Some of these are―eczema, acne, melasma, psoriasis, keratosis pilaris, hives, rosacea, scleroderma, and vitiligo. Along with these skin problems, a high blood pressure and hormonal imbalance can also cause red skin on the face that is full of blotches.

Weather Conditions

Extremes in weather conditions is another cause of blotchy skin. Exposure to the sun leads to a sunburn and a red, blotchy, peeling skin to form.
Along with that, very dry or cold weather can also cause red blotches along with pain and dryness. There are certain other conditions that have been known to cause red skin blotches on the face.
The intake of certain medications might cause a side effect and result in blotchy skin. So also, it has been noticed that many people who have vomited, have developed this condition.

How to Get Rid of Blotchy Skin

There are certain ways to prevent and treat red blotches on face. Make sure that you follow proper skin care and protect your face when you're in extreme weather conditions or in harsh sunlight. Moisturizing your face with sunscreen and covering your body well is essential.
With the cases of allergies and alcohol, it goes without saying that you should avoid those products that cause an allergy and limit the intake of alcohol. For all other causes, it is necessary that you visit a skin specialist at the earliest so that he/she can prescribe the right kind of medication for this skin condition.
For instant relief though, you can wash the affected area with warm water and an antibacterial wash. Then apply either an antiseptic cream or fresh aloe gel. This will take the inflammation down and help reduce the other symptoms of itching.
Now that you know some of the causes and treatment forms for blotchy skin on the face, the next time you have an unfortunate accident like this one, you will not panic and know what to do.
