Skin care protects other organs of the body from harmful bacteria, viruses, and other elements in the environment. When it comes to skin care, the market is saturated with a plethora of products in the form of creams, powders, gels, etc. While some of them actually work, their action occurs externally, and hence is temporary. Fish oil can provide a regular internal treatment for maintaining skin health.

How Does Fish Oil Benefit the Skin

It is a well-known fact, that fish oil containing omega-3 fatty acids, benefits skin in multiple ways. It helps to keep the skin healthy, and provides a glowing complexion. This is because the oil nourishes the skin tissues from within.
Eczema and psoriasis are two severe skin disorders. Eczema is characterized by dry patches on skin, and psoriasis is characterized by the occurrence of white patches with red blotches. Regular intake of fish oil helps in preventing the aggravation of these symptoms, as well as in hastening recovery from these conditions.
It is also beneficial for treating skin acne. The omega-3 essential fatty acids named eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), are known to inhibit the formation of androgens. This, in turn, reduces the production of sebum, thus preventing the formation of acne, and helping to clear away the existing acne within a week or two.
EPA and DHA are known to possess anti-inflammatory properties, and prevent inflammation associated with acne. Moreover, these agents are also anti-bacterial by nature, thus eliminating the acne-causing bacteria present in the skin.
Regular consumption of fish oil delays the onset of wrinkles, fine lines, and other the signs of aging. Also, there have been cases wherein people have claimed that the oil helps in preventing sunburns.
Overdose of fish oil supplements may cause allergies and side effects. Hence, one must be careful about the dosage, while consuming fish oil supplements in the form of liquids, tablets, capsules, etc. Consulting an appropriate expert, to determine the right form and dosage, is necessary for preventing any adverse reactions.
